O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season in the early part of 2005, when she was still a high school student. Her performance on the show impressed jury, and she received a promotion to an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil was given high praise by judges, but she suffered substantial losses during the top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated to the lowest 3 and 2 spots and bottom 2 respectively. The judges were shocked by the results and advised the viewers to vote for contestants like Melissa, who had the best singing abilities. In spite of consistently impressive performance from then onwards, O'Neil never again finished among the bottom three. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performances in September of 2005. Werner reportedly said that the headlines would state that O'Neil was able to defeat Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and youngest winner in the Idol history. O'Neil received a call shortly after her win from Canadian PM Paul Martin, congratulating on her win of Canadian Idol.
